Profile of a lazy gardener

Growing up in Silicon Valley in between the time orchards ruled the land and before the tech companies fully blossomed, I hunted for Easter eggs in my mother’s raised bed edible garden. I grew up with a taste for edibles grown at home, not realizing until my mid-twenties that Meyer lemons were actually a distinct variety and all those other lemons weren't actually meant to taste like Meyers.

After finishing grad school and starting my first full time job, I spent my free time learning to grow edibles in containers. At this point in my life, I was rather mobile – moving about once a year, so containers were a natural choice. I drove my edibles to new homes on either sides of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, went from growing lettuce to habanero peppers, and my container garden ever so slowly started to take over my small outdoor spaces.

Upon moving to Seattle and renting a house with a small yard – my husband and I proposed an idea to our landlords to build three 4’x8’ raised beds in our front yard. To my surprise, they agreed and the Edible Garden Project was born.

Having been a casual blogger since 2005, by 2011 I had become more serious about creating online multimedia content for my newest web project; Gluten Free Travelette. At the time, I was using it as platform for sharing my adventures eating out gluten free on the road and at home – so adding my edible gardening exploits seemed a natural extension. Over three years I built the series out and continued to expand my knowledge of edible gardening and develop my own personal style; dubbed “lazy gardening.” I did my best to offer straight talk and an honest experience of both the good and the ugly. One of my most popular posts discussed the difficulty of getting into raised bed gardening as renter – always having the looming possibility of having to move out.

As of 2014, I'm still living in a rental house in Seattle with our front yard raised bed edible garden. While I'm no longer writing about edible gardening on my website - it's still a part of my life. If you're curious about how my edible garden is growing, you can follow me on Instagram, where in addition to images of my travels and my dog, Parsley, I post updates of my urban gardening exploits.
